How it pains me that this four letter word is so misunderstood, misused, and maligned. We have taken a word and simplified it to the point of trash. Love is something that possesses such beauty and is the pinnacle of our human relations… and now it is simplified to sex, lust, and shallow emotion. Ouch.
‘Tis the season of love!? I’m quite certain the holiday season is not the season of sex… though we all know there are a good number of Christmas and New Years babies out there 😉 …
But seriously… Let’s take a look at how Miriam Webster would define love:
Definition of love
1a(1): strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties <maternal love for a child>(2): attraction based on sexual desire : affection and tenderness felt by lovers(3): affection based on admiration, benevolence, or common interests <love for his old schoolmates>b: an assurance of affection <give her my love>
2: warm attachment, enthusiasm, or devotion <love of the sea>
3a: the object of attachment, devotion, or admiration <baseball was his first love>b(1): a beloved person :darling —often used as a term of endearment (2)British —used as an informal term of address
4a: unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another: as (1): the fatherly concern of God for humankind (2): brotherly concern for others b: a person’s adoration of God
5: a god or personification of love
7: the sexual embrace :copulation
SO MANY. This word has more definitions than any other word we have looked at this month. We have twisted and turned this word’s meaning over the years! Someone saying, “I love you” could mean countless things… use and interpret wisely!
But when it comes to the holiday season, what type of love are we to be experiencing? I want to assure you that the love that is meant to reign through this season is not simply meant for those you so easily give your love to. What good is it to love those who are easy to love? Love’s power is that it is UNCONDITIONAL… love is unearned and given freely. If I receive love from someone it is not because I did something for him/her, but because they choose to esteem me and give their concern and care to me simply for my betterment.
Love is so pure… and love is nearly impossible for us humans to get right. We may have moments, but there has never been a human relationship in existence that has maintained pure, unrelenting, unselfish, unconditional love. We mess up. We regard ourselves as higher. We think we deserve better. We can’t believe someone would treat us that way. We seek what we think we deserve. We want them to get what they deserve. Ever have these feelings during the most wonderful time of the year?
If we are to pursue true love, we need to be willing to let go of interpersonal mishaps… regardless of who is at fault… and choose to show care simply for the benefit of someone because their life is valuable and we are no better. THAT is love. That is was this time of year should exude! How splendorous would it be to experience this? Care not about differences or disagreements of any kind and simply do good and care without reservation.
Who can you show some love to this year that you may not have thought to show love? AND how will you do it?
Biblical perspective below…
Many Christians are familiar with the idea that God is love. And that because He loves us, He sent Christ to die for us. But do you realize what grace (undeserved favor) is in the act of God sending His Son to earth for ALL to have access to His kingdom?! The book of Isaiah is FULL of beautiful prophecies about Christ and the new covenant, but it is also full of how wicked we have been and how unfaithful Israel was to God. But, instead of us getting what we deserve, natural consequences for our rebellion, God decides He will not just pursue Israel, but ALL may come to Him.
Think of it this way… If you were betrayed by a group of people that you were close to, handheld, and raised up… would you feel compelled to not only give them another 1000+ chances… but after being let down again and again say, “My people betrayed me, I think I’ll let people who know nothing of me (and have done worse things) should have access to all I have to offer too. Then everyone has it good!” This is absurd. This is unconditional, pure, unselfish LOVE. That is why Jesus came. That is why you have access to God. That is why we must show love to others. God loved us first. We must love Him and part of loving Him is loving ALL His children.
