Tis the Season of… PEACE?

Peace on earth…

Sounds like wishful thinking… an impossibility… a hopeless cause in today’s society? Too many people with such differing ideas of right, wrong, justice, governance, and life purpose. So is peace simply some unattainable idea that we pretend crops up around Christmas time because we pretend that all the bad doesn’t exist and focus our mental efforts on feel-good stories, gifts, yummy food, and Pollyanna music?

Oh goodness, for all our sakes, I sure hope not!

So let’s go to Miriam Webster, shall we?

Definition of peace

  1. 1:  a state of tranquillity or quiet: as a:  freedom from civil disturbance b:  a state of security or order within a community provided for by law or custom <a breach of the peace>

  2. 2:  freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions

  3. 3:  harmony in personal relations

  4. 4a:  a state or period of mutual concord between governments b:  a pact or agreement to end hostilities between those who have been at war or in a state of enmity

While external peace may be far from our grasp, (we only have so much control…) there is certainly one side of peace that we can pursue for ourselves. Internal peace (#2) is achievable and interpersonal peace (#3) as well. How?

We do not have to give life to “disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions.” We ultimately can take control of what we allow ourselves to dwell on and think. With intentionality, consistency, and realistic reframes we can not only choose to stop entertaining non-peaceful thoughts and emotions, but we can get to the point where they rarely (never is simply unrealistic) cross our minds. If you are in the midst of great inner-turmoil, I am sure this sounds near impossible… but you can gain victory. It’s not easy and it doesn’t come quickly… but it is possible.

But what about interpersonally? It takes two to tango, right? What if someone else is not willing to let a situation be peaceful? What if I told you that you could have interpersonal peace, despite the other party’s response? Don’t believe me? Let me share from my own life…

[Vulnerable Moment Ahead…]

Image result for tryI have a relationship in my life that I greatly desire to be mended. I have reached out, I have apologized, I asked for forgiveness, I explained my side without making excuses, I have made it clear I am not upset or holding a grudge, I have asked permission to see this person, I have suggested agreeing to disagree, I have given space as requested, and I have acted kindly in the midst of maltreatment. This relationship is by no means mended… but it 100% has nothing to do with my efforts, thoughts, emotions, or hindrances. I see myself at peace with this person, even though this person will not speak with me.I don’t have to feel as though peaces is robbed from me due to someone’s heart/soul condition. My heart grieves for the anger this person still clings to. I know that I am not the issue, I am the receiver of the anguish.

Are you seeking and longing for internal and interpersonal peace like I talked about above? Have you tried over and over and it just seems impossible to get there on your own? Do not lose heart. I too was in that place and it took some wise counsel to get me where I am today. I would love to be YOUR source of counsel today. Are you ready to achieve inner peace? Below are a few more words to incorporate a biblical perspective of peace…

Image result for bethlehem starGod’s view of peace is so much larger than ours! We are so focused on the here and now, but He is in control and knows all that needs to happen for peace to reign in His Creation. Satan and sin bring us a lack of peace in our existence on Earth, but in Heaven, peace reigns and God plans to one day allow that peace to reign over everything for eternity. Jesus is called the Prince of Peace! He is the source of our peace. His substitutionary death for our rebellion against God allows those of us who have accepted His atonement to know that we have victory! We are able to achieve internal peace NOW because of Him and we will have eternal peace under His rule. “Peace on earth and goodwill to men”… a classic Christmas verse… This didn’t mean that immediately Jesus was going to eliminate war, conflict, strife, and pain. We have natural consequences for our foolish deeds and fallen hearts. This is a long-term, eternal perspective truth. BUT, this truth can allow us the internal peace we desire as we await that glorious day.
