This is such a common feeling by Christians and yet we so often feel ashamed to share this reality because we are so afraid of receiving judgement. And lets be honest to say that there are plenty of people out there who absolutely would judge us! People who would simplify your struggle to you having a sin issue. However, those people are not the people we answer to in the end and are not the source of our worth. If I would have based all my life decisions off of how others would react to me… let’s just say I would be quite miserable. IN FACT… God’s word confirms this:
“The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.” Proverbs 29:25
Furthermore, we are able to see that if we are aiming to be a follower of Christ, worrying about seeking people’s approval will keep us from our life purpose of serving Christ:
“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.” Galatians 1:10
So, I urge you, find a mature Christ follower… someone who embodies Jesus and shows His love so that you can confide in someone that you are in need of help and feel stuck. Many times God uses His children to help His children.
Sin absolutely separates us and causes disjointedness in our relationship with a holy God, but secret, persistent, defiant sin is not necessarily why you are not hearing from God. If this is your struggle, then you know where to start. Get help with this area of your life. If it is not… let’s discuss some other reasons why you may be feeling like your prayers are getting you nowhere.
#1 Perhaps this is a time of silence from the Lord.
God has certainly done this in my life in the past. There have been many times that I am waiting on Him and I have heard NOTHING. Later on I realized that this time of silence was used very purposely by God. He tells us everything we need to know at exactly the right time. There are some situations where we are not to be aware of what is happening… God had periods in history where He was silent toward his people for hundreds of years! God uses silence to do His work sometimes. During the waiting this is time to build up your spiritual strength. Don’t stop your prayers and don’t stop pursuing God’s word. He hears you. He loves you. He is working. Waiting on Him is always worth it. At the end of this post is my favorite song to listen to when I’m waiting to hear from God…
#2 You are not familiar with what God’s voice sounds like.
God speaks to His children! He is not some tricky, sinister Father up in heaven laughing at your confusion and reveling in your sorrow. Scripture is full of evidence that indicated God speaks to His children. And His word is also filled with… HIS WORDS. This probably is not sounding too profound at this moment… but it when you grasp it fully, it is a game changer! God is not going to speak anything to you that is contrary to what is in the Bible. The way is speaks, His values, His standards, His heart, His character… it is all depicted throughout Scripture with His commands, acts, correction, and encouragement. When we are more familiar with the Bible, we are more familiar with the heart of God and what He would sound like if we were to hear Him. If we don’t even know what God would sound like, it would be really hard for us to hear Him when He is speaking! Spend more time reading His word.
#3 You have forgotten about the Holy Spirit.
Christians have the Holy Spirit dwelling inside of them!! Scripture tells us that the Holy Spirit cannot say anything outside of what God speaks… We have the Holy Spirit to connect us to the Father. He is like our translator! Now, my guess is that you have not forgotten about the existence of the Holy Spirit… but perhaps just how powerful, active, and important His role is in the life of believers! I read the book, “Forgotten God”by Fancis Chan, and the fact that sticks out to me the most is that Jesus said it would be BETTER for HIM to leave and for Christians to have the Holy Spirit!! Jesus said the Holy Spirit’s presence trumps His! Without the Holy Spirit, we can not decipher anything. Ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit… daily… watch what happens!
